Man charged after being shot by Cochrane RCMP officer

The suspect suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and no officers or members of the public were injured.

A man who was shot while trying to flee the RCMP near Cochrane is now facing multiple charges.

Cohen Rattlesnake (27), a resident of Morley, Alta., has been charged with two counts of assaulting peace officer with a weapon; flight from peace officer; resisting peace officer; firearm: unauthorized possession; firearm in Motor Vehicle; firearm possession contrary to prohibition order; dangerous operation conveyance;w eapon: unauthorized possession; possession of property obtained by crime.

After a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Rattlesnake was remanded into custody, and was set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary and Tsuut’ina Nation Court of Justice on April 19. As this matter is now before the courts, police say no further information on the case will be provided.

ASIRT announced on April 16 that it was investigating the officer involved shooting.

According to a the press release sent out by the RCMP describing the incident, on April 16, 2024, at 5:08 p.m., Cochrane RCMP attempted the arrest of a suspect following a traffic stop in a rural area surrounding Cochrane.

The suspect’s vehicle collided with a police vehicle, disabling the suspect’s vehicle in the process. The suspect then exited his vehicle and a confrontation ensued, which resulted in an RCMP officer discharging their service weapon.

The suspect suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and no officers or members of the public were injured.

In compliance with legislative requirements, the Director of Law Enforcement was immediately notified causing the deployment of ASIRT to conduct an independent investigation. The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency and in so doing will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators.  Events like this are difficult for everyone involved.
